Not much to re-cap this week, unfortunately.
On Monday my left foot developed a persistent pain (top of the foot, somewhere between the 4th and 5th metatarsal, felt mostly towards the outside-ish of the foot), which lasted post-run… and into Tuesday’s run. Subsequently, I took Wednesday and Thursday off from running (did the arc trainer) and yesterday entirely off. I think that the issue has something to do with the newtons (I had a similar issue around Christmas that resolved by wearing different shoes for awhile)- but I’m also a bit weary that it could be a stress injury brewing.
I did a 4 mile shake-out this morning (half marathon on the schedule for tomorrow)- and while the pain is lessened, it is still there. It didn’t get worse during the run, but it also didn’t get a lot better.
So a decision had to be made. I spent my entire 4 miles thinking about what to do about the race. Is it worth it? I feel speedy and I love the course (and I love racing).
But I have bigger goals in mind than tomorrow’s race.
If the Winter Half at the Hamptons was my “A” race for the season, I would definitely be running tomorrow.
But it isn’t.
Boston is. And I want… NEED to be healthy this year.
No more running through pains and turning them into full blown disasters.
Needless to say, I’m not racing tomorrow.
If you spot me around town today or tomorrow, I’m sorry. I’m grumpy and sad about making this decision- so I may be prone to acting a little bit like a small child. (demanding, whiny, maybe even a little snappy. I’m sorry in advance.)

Monday- 9 miles, easy. pain in left foot
Tuesday- 7 miles with 8×400 @ 5k pace – foot intermittently painful, but pain does not fully resolve
Wednesday- 70 minutes arc trainer
Thursday- 65 minutes, acr trainer
Saturday- 4 miles, didn’t wear my garmin, approximately 31 minutes. Foot still painful. Does not become progressively painful during the run, but does not “work itself out”, either. I also notice a change in my gait (running more on my whole foot instead of mid-foot).
Total Miles- 20. womp womp.
